Keratoconus
A rare progressive disease that most often has its onset in
the teenage years or early twenties, keratoconus can occur
in one or both eyes causing the normally round cornea to thin
and bulge into a cone-like shape. This cone shape cornea deflects
light as it enters the eye on its way to the light-sensitive
retina, causing distorted vision. The unusual shape of the
cornea and distorted vision is called irregular astigmatism.
Eyeglasses or soft contact lenses may help correct vision
in the mildest form of keratoconus. However as the disease
advances, the cornea thins and continues to change from a round
cornea into a cone-like shape. The resultant increase in irregular
astigmatism makes it more difficult to correct with soft lenses
or eyeglasses. Rigid contact lenses are frequently used, although
patients and practitioners find they offer limited wearing
time and reduced end of the day comfort.
Every SynergEyes® KC hybrid contact lens is custom made
to provide the best lens to cornea fit for optimized vision.
The "breathable" oxygen permeable rigid center of the SynergEyes® KC lens promotes corneal health, while providing the vision you
need to improve your quality of life. The soft skirt holds
the lens in place better than a rigid lens, reducing or eliminating
mechanical rubbing or dislodging and prevents debris from getting
under the lenses. The rigid optics and surrounding soft skirt
are designed to provide stable clear vision and all day comfort,
making this the perfect contact lens solution for patients
with keratoconus.
